Window Replacement: 5 Things To Know

Ruben Franklin

If one of your home's windows is broken or damaged, then you must decide whether you should replace the entire window assembly or just the damaged pane of glass. There are a few different factors that impact this decision.

1. Budget Concerns

A replacement window with frame and glass is much more costly than simply replacing the damaged glass pane. If you are on a budget when it comes to repairs, or if you would prefer to save now towards a whole house window replacement later, then it makes the most financial sense to only replace the damaged pane of glass instead of the whole window.

2. Insulation Issues

Some windows may be insulated. These consist of multiple pane layers of glass, typically with an insulating layer of gas between the multiple pane layers. Once the glass is broken or a seal fails, the insulating gas is lost. If the level of insulation is important to you, then it makes sense to replace the entire window. If the energy loss isn't a big concern, then simply replacing the glass is a viable option.

3. Frame Condition

Although the damage to the glass may seem minor enough that only a replacement pane is needed, it's important to inspect the whole window before making a decision. This is especially true for wooden frames. If the frame is rotted, splintering, or cracked, then it may be a better choice to replace the entire window. Pane replacement is suitable only if the frame is in good condition with no major damage.

4. Damage Type

Consider the type of damage on the glass. A single shattered pane is a low cost and quick repair. Damage to the glass, rails, muntins, or stiles and rails require more than a simple glass replacement. You may be able to keep the frame, but a window insert that includes the basic glass supports may be a better option than just simply replacing the broken pane.

5. Efficiency Standards

If drafts are an issue, or if the window lets in a lot of heat in the summer, then efficiency may be an issue. Replacing a damaged pane can remedy drafts if a crack or failed seal is the issue, but it won't solve the problem if drafts are a result of leaks in the frame. Pane replacement alone is also not a remedy for thermal heat gain. In this case, energy efficient window replacements can be a more effective choice.

Contact a window glass replacement service if you determine only the glass needs to be replaced and if you want to look at more info.

About Me
Home Swimming Pools: A Care and Maintenance Guide

As a teenager, I joined my local swim team and soon became a champion swimmer. I have been swimming my entire life, and my love for water pushed me to purchase a home with a large in-ground pool. Strangely enough, after years of swimming I had no idea how to take care of the pool. I knew that I needed to add chemicals to get rid of potentially dangerous bacteria, and I also knew that chemicals kept algae at bay. I didn't know how to choose from hydrogen peroxide, salt, or chlorine additives. I definitely had no idea about shock, and I didn't know how many chemicals to add. After some trial and error, a very green pool, and a necessary draining, I figured it out. I have compiled for you a number of blogs and resources so you do not have to make costly mistakes like me.
