Effective Steps For Storing Fabrics

Whether it is for your business or hobby, making clothing and other accessories can be extremely rewarding. However, there are some mistakes that people will make when storing these fabrics that could compromise their appearance or quality. This can be extremely wasteful as you will likely have to replace these fabrics.

Be Aware Of The Threat Posed By Pests

When you are storing your fabrics, you must be aware of the fact that pests will be one of the leading causes of damage to your stored fabric. Often, these pests will use the fabric as nesting materials or food, which can lead to large holes being chewed in the fabrics. For this reason, you should thoroughly treat the area where the fabrics are being stored. Unfortunately, some individuals will only treat this area for pests when they first put the fabrics in it. However, you will need to treat the area on a regular schedule as a result of the pesticides degrading.

Avoid Leaving The Fabric In The Sunlight

Sunlight can be extremely degrading to fabric. This is a result of the intense light from the sun causing the pigments in the fabric to start to break down. This can lead to the color fading. Also, exposure to this intense light can cause the threads in the fabric to start to fray and become increasingly brittle. Due to these potentially serious problems that can be caused by long-term exposure to sunlight, you should always store your fabrics in a dark area. If this is not possible, you should place a cover over the fabrics to block as much of the sunlight as possible.

Put Humidity Control Devices In The Room With The Stored Fabric

Humidity is another common cause of degradation to stored fabrics. Over time, increases in humidity can cause moisture to start to collect on the fabrics. This moisture will lead to the fabrics rotting or developing mold and mildew. One effective option for mitigating this risk is to use humidity control devices. These devices can keep the humidity level stable by either absorbing or releasing moisture into the air. While some people may assume that this will always involve the installation of complex humidifiers and dehumidifiers, this is not necessary. There are small humidity control packets that can be used for this task. These packets can be placed in and around the fabric to help prevent dramatic humidity swings. Every few months, you should replace the packets to ensure that they are able to continue protecting your stored fabrics.
